Think you can’t be an entrepreneur? Think again!

One of the reasons a lot of doctors I talk to do not want to start businesses is because they are insecure.

‘I don’t have any experience in business.’

‘I don’t have an MBA.’

I can’t do what that entrepreneur over there is doing.’

I don’t know where I will find the time.’

What if I fail?’

What will people think?’

However, deep down inside, they know there is more.

They know that as physicians what they do is great and they appreciate the careers they have but they know that there is so much more they can be and do.

I am happy to let you know a few things:

  • The first thing you need is not an MBA.
  • Almost every successful entrepreneur has failed many times
  • People don’t think about you as much as you think they do
  • Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, a trillion dollar company has only 24 hours. You have the time, you just need to learn how to master it.

The things that make you secure are all things that you can overcome.

You are not a static person, you are dynamic.

Think about it, you had the potential to be a physician when you were ten years old.

It was a herculean task but you did it.

There are some people who decided it was too hard, or they weren’t good enough so they quit but not you!

In the same way, you have the potential to be a wildly successful entrepreneur, you just have to go through the process.

So what is the first thing you need?

It is what makes the lion the king of the jungle.

Coming to think of it, why is the lion the king of the jungle?

The elephant is bigger.

The cheetah is faster.

The giraffe is taller.

The hippopotamus is heavier.

The chimpanzee is smarter.

In spite of all these others that are ‘better’ than the lion, he is the king.

Others may have something you don’t;

They may do things you can’t.

However, if you do these three things, you can THRIVE.

1. Believe – Your mindset will make or break you. You have to believe that you can be a successful entrepreneur. Henry Ford said it best

If you believe you can or you can’t, you are right.

You are not an imposter, just like you weren’t as a resident. You were a bona fide physician sharpening your clinical skills on the job.

 2. Change – every business skill is a learnable skill. You have to aggressively go after personal development to acquire the skills you need to be successful.

3. Take action – This is where the rubber meets the road.

Don’t be intimidated.

Only 3 % of the US population are physicians.

You are that special.

Don’t stop now!

Thank you for reading. Until next time…
